“So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people,” says Vic Gundotra on the Official Google Blog. “But we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.”
Google+ Pages are different from Profiles because they are specifically designed for non-human entities. You can create a Page in the following types of categories: Local Business or Place; Product or Brand; Company, Institution or Organization; Arts, Entertainment or Sports; Other.
The brand new Google+ feature, “Pages,” allows local and global businesses, brands, companies, and organizations to connect with customers and fans in an interactive fashion. Now the platform not only enables people to create pages, but also encourages businesses to grow their following, which means businesses can now have a powerful Google+ presence and build their brand.
The clear advancements of the Google+ Business Pages:
-
Visitors can easily recommend the page with the +1 button and/or add it to their circles.
-
Once a visitor has added the page to their circles, they can read all the page’s updates directly from their main stream or circles’ streams.
-
Page administrators can see who has circled them and reciprocate, circle other pages, and view updates of circled visitors and pages in their streams.
-
Fans/customers and pages can interact with one another through comments, tags and sharing.
-
Hangouts allow pages to connect directly with visitors.
Google+ Pages have both comparisons and contrasts to the Facebook business pages, by offering much of the same social functionality. Similar to Facebook, even though you’ll access your page through a personal account, you’ll have the ability to choose whether you want to act as yourself or the business page, when on Google+. You can do many of the same things that a personal account can do, including; share photos, share videos, share links and conduct Hangouts.
Google has Google +1 buttons all over the web that operate as a recommendation or nod of satisfaction, but clicking on one of these buttons on a web site doesn’t cause a business to be followed within Google+, just the page or mention.
Google want brands to be represented on Google+ enabling interaction with their fans, customers or business partners. The most unique way to interact on Google+ is to conduct a ‘Hangout’, which is essentially a group video chat.
Google+ may not yet be a threat to Facebook, but it is making plans to narrow the gap in the short-term. As such, the recent addition of pages for organizations is a huge step forward offering functionality that blends with Google’s formidable services (search, ads, places).
Overall, Google+ pages looks like a great way for businesses to better connect with their customers. Businesses, and various organizations would be able to better connect with their customers by offering, not only various offers to people that visit the Google+ pages site, but also to share pictures, and different tidbits of news about the company. You could also use the Google+ page to run contests, and conduct surveys to find out about what your customers are thinking – in general, and about your brand. The Google+ page can be a great tool for promoting your business without spending a lot of money.
